A gentleman, called Lord Cowley, in blue coat, white waistcoat with red trim, tied cravat, powdered hair
on ivory
oval, 2 5/16 in. (60 mm.) high, gold frame with diamond surround, the reverse engraved 'Portrait of Lord Cowley by Plimer.'

Lot Essay

It would appear both the attribution of Plimer and identification of the sitter as Lord Cowley in the engraved inscription on the frame are erroneous. Henry Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley was born in 1804.
