Lot Essay

A hand written note on the reverse identifies the sitter as Mr Oglander. D. Foskett (John Smart, the Man and His Miniatures, London, 1964, p. 71) mentions miniatures of Dr John Oglander, dated 1779, and of Lady and Miss Oglander. Foskett (op. cit., p. 83) also lists Miss Oglander as 'sister to Sir John Oglander of the Isle of Wight'.
