A PARIS (DIHL ET GUERHARD) GOLD-GROUND PORTRAIT CUP AND SAUCER
CIRCA 1815, THE CUP WITH GILT Dihl MARK, THE SAUCER WITH IRON-RED STENCILLED M.F de Dihl Guerhard Paris MARK
With a matt-gilt winged-caryatid handle, the cup painted with a three-quarter length portrait of MME. de Montespan, wearing pearls in her long curled hair and an elaborate laced red, blue and cream dress, in a wooded landscape within an oval cartouche, titled to the domed foot, on a richly-gilt ground tooled and burnished with bands of stiff leaves, palmettes, rosettes and scrolling foliage, the saucer similarly tooled with a central flowerhead rosette and radiating stiff-leaves and palmettes (minute scratching to gilding)
