This painting was acquired directly from the artist. In the upper colophon the painting is dedicated to Yang Huasheng, from Zhejiang, the older brother of well-known painter and comedic artist Lu Yang, and was a leading scholar of Shanghai's Comedic Theatre. At the age of thirteen Yang joined the Great World New Chinese Opera Company. He later partnered with Zhang Qiaonong in 1937 and took part in the fifth regiment of Zhou Enlai's self-directed Resist the Enemy drama, which was used as propaganda performances to raise anti-Japanese sentiments. Returning to Shanghai in 1947, he performed in several notable plays, including Putonghua and Fang Yan, Empty City Strategy of Ningbo. Taking part in conferences and giving lectures all over China, Yang is particularly noted for his autobiographical publication Yang Huasheng's 60 years of Comedy.
