AN ENGLISH DELFT INSCRIBED AND DATED PUNCH-BOWL
1740, PERHAPS BRISTOL OR LONDON
The exterior painted with a peacock and a long-tailed bird in flight among trailing flowering shrubs, above a band of diamond within ovolo-ornament and concentric blue circles, the interior with an owl and the inscription SINCE DRINKING HAS POWER, TO GIVE US RELIEF. COME FILL UP THE BOWL, & A POX ON ALL GRIEF. IF THAT WON'T DO. WE'LL HAVE SUCH ANOTHER. & SO WE'LL PROCEED, FROM ONE BOWL TO THE OTHER:, the underside with the initials K/WA/1740 within a double circle
