Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724) was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, taking his MA there in 1695 and where he was a fellow from 1701-1713, becoming a DD in 1708. He was a rabid Tory, headstrong in his beliefs, and made it clear in his sermons exactly where he stood. In 1709 he was invited to preach at St. Paul's Cathedral when he attacked Catholics, dissenters, the Whig government and all who chose to undermine the church. The published sermon became a best seller. The Whig ministry felt example should be made of him and in 1710 he was impeached for libel and found guilty. Although banned from preaching for three years he became a hero of the populace. In the general election the Tories came to power and Sacheverell became rector of St. Andrew's, Holborn.
