A LONDON DELFT DATED ARMORIAL CAUDLE-CUP
1674, SOUTHWARK OR PERHAPS NORFOLK HOUSE, LAMBETH
Of slightly tapering cylindrical form with loop handle, the front painted in manganese and blue with the arms of 'A chevron between three Hats each adorned with three Feathers on the sinister side' with the date 1674 flanking the initials S/N.A, the reverse with Orientals among trees and rockwork flanking the handle enriched with scroll and dash-ornament

Provenance
A manuscript note to the underside states Nicholas Sparling and Abigale, (née Martin), his wife married 28 April 1657 Parish Church ST Albans Herts. Their son Moses married Jane Fountain. See Sparling Elliot, and Atkins Pedigrees. To present owner Charles Edwards Atkins Nov 4 1931., thence by descent until sold, 1984.

Another caudle-cup of 1674 in the Museum of London, showing similar calligraphy and nuances of painting style, especially the row of dots along the forehead of a seated figure, is illustrated by Frank Britton, London Delftware,, London, 1987, p. 125, no. 77.
