Carved as the head of a bearded ogre in elaborate head gear, formerly surmounted by a hen or cockerel, the brim of the hat modelled as the prow of a sailing vessel, the sides carved in relief with mythical beasts, the reverse with a zoomorphic mask

Lot Essay

A comparable nutcracker is illustrated in Edward Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, 1968, pl. 70., section IV. It is suggested that this example is French, circa 1500.
