Lot Essay

This candlestick in the form of a lion is reminiscent in both form and finish of contemporary acquamaniles. Although these were manufactured throughout Europe, this piece resembles English depictions of lions and leopards. A similar figural candlestick was sold in The Lear Collection of Socket Candlesticks, Christie's, London, 15 December 1998, lot 27.
