Lot Essay

A Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Thomas Yates began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1788 and continued to do so until his untimely death in 1796, when he was shot whilst entering his house after a dispute regarding ownership. His short working life means that his paintings are extremely rare.
