Château La Mission-Haut-Brion--Vintage 1955
Pessac (Graves), cru classé. Belgian-bottled
Vandermeulen bottled. Bin-soiled and slightly damaged labels, one detached. Levels: one top and one mid/upper-shoulder
Tasting note: Not a gentle, easy '55. Despite its richness and vinosity, agressively tannic in 1966, bitterness marring its finish in the early 1970s. By the end of that decade its bouquet had achieved perfection and, despite a bit of bite, was lovely. Fully opened up, softer, sweet and ripe in the mid-1980s. Most recently, with an astonishing spicy bouquet, eucalyptus, raspberries - almost like '45 Mouton. Very exciting wine, crisp fruit but a bit tart on the finish. Last noted at the La Réserve tasting, June 2000. At best ***** Should still be very good.
