Château Montrose--Vintage 1996
Saint-Estèphe, 2me cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting note: The Charmolüe family's centenary vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon 65 Merlot 25 Cabernet Franc 10 Traditional fermentation in oak vats and 20 new oak barriques. At the opening tasting, April 1997, it was top of the the St-Estèphes: low-keyed nose but exceptional richness, flesh and fruit on the palate. Next, at the Wine Spectator 'Top Ten' seminar in New York, bouquet now enriched, great depth; sweeter and fleshier than its neighbour and rival, Ch Cos d'Estournel. Crisp, dry finish. A month later, at the MW tasting; lovely colour, cherry-red core; rich, full, chunky, complete, impressive. Last tasted Nov 2000 *(****) 2006-2026. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
