After the death of Sir David Wilkie R.A. (1785-1841), Hayter was granted the title of Principal Painter in Ordinary to The Queen and was knighted the following year. He painted several important royal events, including Queen Victoria's coronation, 1837, marriage, 1840 and the Christening of the Prince of Wales of 1843.

The drawings in the present lot are studies for the portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in Hayter's large scale oil painting The Marriage of Queen Victoria in the Chapel Royal, James' Palace, London, 10 February 1840, which hangs on public display at Buckingham Palace, London.
