Lot Essay

This is closely related to a larger painting (24 x 72 in.) entitled Early Morning Newmarket, exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1950, no. 207. Another version, A Morning's Work, Newmarket Heath, was exhibited in New York, Wildenstein, Alfred J. Munnings Images of the Turf and Field, 28 April-3 June 1983, no. 90 (collection of Jacqueline Getty Phillips). There are two further studies of the horse at the far right entitled Going up the Canter in the possession of the Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum, Dedham, Essex.

Munnings enjoyed going to the early morning gallops on the Heath and observed in his memoirs how the jockeys ride and has clearly articulated this in the present work,
'Again observe these experts on fit horses full of life and mettle at the start of the canters and gallops. To raise themselves on their knees, many of them hang on the rein...-the horse with head pulled round and high in the air.' (A.J. Munnings, The Finish, Bungay, 1952, pp. 181-182).

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
