COOK, Moses. The Manner of Raising, Ordering, and Improving Forrest-Trees. London: printed for Peter Parker, 1676. 4° (195 x 155mm). 4 engraved plates of diagrams. (Occasional light spotting and soiling.) Contemporary calf (clumsily rebacked, extremities rubbed).
FIRST EDITION. This popular treatise was written by the gardener to the Earl of Essex at Cassioberry Park, Hertfordshire. John Evelyn wrote: 'no man has been more industrious than this noble lord in planting about his seate ... the gardens are likewise very rare, & cannot be otherwise, having so skillfull an artist to governe them as Mr. Cooke' (Diary ed. by de Beer, 4, 199-200 (1955).
