HARDY, Thomas (1840-1928). Autograph letter signed ('Thomas Hardy') to 'Mr Dewar', Max Gate, 9 December 1914, referring dismissively to his great collection Satires of Circumstance (which included the 'Poems of 1912-13'), 'I raked together all the verse I could find to fill up my late volume -- a heterogeneous lot! -- & I fear I must pass over in silence the transit into next year, the times being too uncertain to inspire the right message', concluding with a reference to the ongoing war, 'I hope that we shall see light ahead before long', and thanks for some favourable reviews, one page, 8vo, bifolium (minor staining, traces of old paste to verso of integral blank).
