FIRST EDITION. Final plate without grotesque border; the sixth plate correctly placed at p. 182 on plate list. Grimaldi's manuscript had previously been edited by Thomas Egerton Wilks who sold it to Bentley before Dickens was commissioned to re-edit it for publication. The introductory chapter revealed 'his childhood veneration for clowns and his insatiable curiosity about them' (Dickens Index p. 164). Eckel pp. 140-142; Gimbel B64. (2)
