A-ndëf, le support représentant une femme agenouillée tenant son enfant devant elle, chacun portant un pagne et divers ornements, le tambour avec des motifs géométriques sur la paroi et la peau de reptile retenue par des tenons, pigments rouge et noir.

Provenance

Selon le Dr. Hermann Khün, Münich, le 29.12.1969, le tambour aurait été acquis en 1949 ou 1950 par J. A. Hilgers en Guinée française (seulement 7 ans après celui du British Museum) où il travaillait en tant que juge. Il fut établit que l'oeuvre avait été réalisée avant la première guerre mondiale.

Lot Essay

Voir Lamp, F., Art of the Baga, a Drama of Cultural Reinvention, New York, 1996, figs.98-99 et 103 pour des tambours similaires dont le tambour conservé au British Museum, datant du début du XXe siècle et probablement du même artiste. Le thème de la mère agenouillée guidant son petit garçon est le motif le plus répandu dans les tambours caryatides. Comme les mariées, les caryatides portent autour de la taille une chaîne de cloches en métal, des perles et des graines autour des chevilles.
