This stool forms part of a larger suite of furniture whose legs are distinctly faceted in the manner of a shell which echoes the shell- carved seat-rail. The suite is first identified by The Knight of Glin and J. Peill in Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 216, where the offered stool and Reilly armchair are illustrated (p. 219, figs. 59 and 52, respectively). The identifiable pieces of this design now comprise: a settee offered as the following lot in this sale, an armchair most recently sold from the William F. Reilly Collection, Christie's, New York, 14 October 2009, lot 128 and possibly the same as that sold by the late Brigadier W. E. Clarke, CMG, DSO, Christie's, London, 25 July 1969, lot 79. A matching stool was most recently sold from the John Parry Collection, Christie's, London, 25 March 2010, lot 17 (£30,000), while a pair of side chairs was sold by the late Simon Sainsbury, Esq., Christie's, London, 18 June 2008, lot 327 (£23,750). Interestingly, a matching side table is currently on the market with Apter-Fredericks, London.
