Lot Essay

This fine sculpture with power and well carved follows Tibetan prototypes, but utilises Chinese sculptural techniques in wood and gold lacquer. The wood basis embellished with textile which is lacquered.
It seems to be executed in the Imperial style of Qianlong and was very likely associated with one of the Lamaist temples constructed during his reign. See a similar but larger example sold in our New York Rooms, 21 March 2008, lot 631.
