Time is the essence of all photography: time that slips between one's fingers, time that slips between the eyes, the time of things and the time of people, the time of light and the time of emotions... time that will never be the same again. JEANLOUP SIEFF Jeanloup Sieff (1933-2000) left an indelible stamp on the history of photography and has assumed a rightful place in the international Pantheon of great talents of the last half century, with a special place of honour in his native France. The present co lection, comprising exemplary prints acquired directly from the photographer and including unique vintage prints, pays tribute to Sieff's artistry; and in the range of imagery included -- embracing fashion, erotic subjects, portraits and landscape -- illustrates the various genres within which he so tenaciously and effectively pursued his highly personal vision. The work that Sieff created through a career that lasted over forty years is so consistently infused with the potent traces of his personality and imagination that his pictures are always immediately recognisable. There are certain consistent physical characteristics -- the ingredients one might say of a signature style. He loved the discipline of black and white, only rarely working in colour; his prints are invariably beautifully crafted with a subtle exploitation of tone and with a fondness for the evocative potential of shadow; and he frequently used to great advantage the spatial distortion of wide-angle lenses. But beyond these technicalities, and of greater ultimate significance, was his ability to capture the elusive and the poetic, and particularly to evoke a mood at once romantic and melancholic. La collection que nous vous présentons ce moi-ci, comprenant tirages exceptionels acquis directement auprès du photographe et figurant de rares tirages d'époque, met à l'honneur le talent artistique de Jeanloup Sieff. Ces tirages -- représentant les thèmes allant de la mode à l'érotisme, en passant par des portraits et des paysages -- démontrent la variété des genres utilisés avec rigueur et efficacité dans l'expression de sa vision personnelle. Le travail que Jeanloup Sieff a réalisé au cours de ses 40 années de carrière révèle de réels indices sur sa personnalité et son imagination, à tel point que ses photographies sont tout de suite reconnnaissables. On retrouve dans ses oeuvres certaines caractéristiques qui lui sont propres et qui lui ont permis de se démarquer. Il privilégie le noir et blanc, travaillant rarement les couleurs; ses épreuves sont soigneusement exécutées avec une subtile exploitation des tons et avec un affection particulière pour potentiel évocateur des ombres. Il utilise par ailleurs à son avantage la déformation spatiale de ses objectifs à grand angle. Mais Jeanloup Sieff a marqué les esprits, au-delà de ces détails techniques, pour sa capacité à capturer la poésie et l'insaisissable, et à créer à travers ses clichés une ambiance à la fois romantique et mélancolique. Je m'étais obligé à ne prendre avec moi qu'un seul objectif de 21 mm sur mon Leica, jouant ainsi à pile ou face mon avenir à Bazaar. Comme les photos plurent, malgré les déformations, je restai.
