Three Private Collections and
the Cellar of Le Paradou
12 June 2010
Dear Client,
Welcome to Christie's June sale of Fine and Rare wines. This sale has a wealth of interesting wine, the bulk of it drawn from three important collections, along with gems thrown in by a diverse group of generous collectors as well as a lovely selection from the renowned Washington D.C. restaurant, Le Paradou.
All three of our important private collections came from California, although their compositions are very diverse. The first (lots 1-44) reflects a love affair with the great wines of France. This consignor bought his Bordeaux en primeur, and chose his purchases wisely. He's now offering cases of '89 Pétrus, Lafite, Haut-Brion, and many other greats from this vintage, along with cases of the equally great first growth '90s and a marvelous selection of Montrachet.
The second collection (lots 45-270) also pays homage to the wines of Bordeaux's greatest producers in the finest years, but is really remarkable for its concentration of great wines from California, including a wealth of Screaming Eagle, a huge assortment of Harlan in bottles, rare magnums and even more rare double magnums. Colgin, Sloan, Amuse Bouche, and all the rest of the best are there as well in quantity.
The third great collection (lots 303-367) also features a roll call of California's best producers, but throws in an impressive selection of Burgundies, in particular the wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, in great years such as '59, '62, '71, '78 to name only a few, as well as a fine selection of Bordeaux including cases of Lafite from '82 and '00.
Interspersed with these major collections are really beautiful wines in smaller quantities but with no less lustrous names, such as magnums of '93 Musigny vieilles vignes from de Vogüé, case quantities of 2000 Pétrus, a mathusalem of 1990 Cristal, and many others.
The sale wraps up (lots 517-940) with an incredibly diverse offering from the legendary restaurant Le Paradou in Washington D.C. This restaurant had one of the finest lists anywhere, and their cellar offerings in this sale include an entire range of Bordeaux and Burgundy: from the greats like Pétrus, Lafite, Latour and DRC to classics such as Trotanoy, Vieux Château Certan and Roulot. The collection also ranges much further afield than most, including treasures from the Loire, Alsace, and Italy as well as an exuberant dose of California juice.
There is truly something for everyone in this sale, and I am certain you will find wines here that will delight you for years to come. My team and I will be delighted to guide you through this rich array of wonderful wines - don't hesitate to reach out to us directly, and we look forward to seeing you at the sale.
Sincerely,

1989 and 1990 TOP GROWTH BORDEAUX AND MONTRACHET
The collection included in the following lots can only be described as perfect. Featured here are 1989 and 1990 Bordeaux in original wood cases and aged Montrachet from top producers. All of the wines were purchased as futures and immediately transferred to fantastic temperature and humidity controlled professional storage with private lockers. There this collection remained until removed for this sale by a team of Christie's specialists. In every case, Christie's was the first to open the original wood cases and discovered conditions that are literally pristine. There is nary a nicked label or low level in the lots below. Bid with confidence.
1989 BORDEAUX
Some say it is the exclamation point at the end of an outstanding decade. Others call it the older brother of a formidable duo. Others still describe it as the rock in the center of a triumvirate of great vintages. No matter who you ask, though, 1989 is an exceptional vintage.
1989 started early, with growth in May a full three weeks ahead of schedule, and it didn't stop there. Indeed, the summer of 1989 was drier, hotter and sunnier than any of the previous three decades with one notable exception - 1961. This led to an early harvest of ripe fruit with a bonus to those that waited for the tannins to catch up, creating wines of unprecedented balance.
Standouts of the vintage include the usual suspects such as Lafite, Haut-Brion, Cheval Blanc and Pétrus, while Clinet, Lynch-Bages and the dueling Pichons created exceptional wines as well.
Here you have the opportunity to purchase the best wines from one of the best vintages in recent history, all in their original cases, bought on release and stored in climate control ever since.
