Michael Jackson can be clearly seen wearing an identical jacket when arriving, performing and receiving his Legend award at the 2006 MTV Video Awards in Japan.
According to the vendor the jacket was obtained from a charity who were given the jacket by a storage company that had been storing it along with other items on behalf of Jackson. As payment for the storage was never received the company donated the jacket to a charity. At this time Jackson's popularity was waning and the storage company decided to give the items away rather than trying to raise funds from them.
