FAULKNER, William. Autograph letter signed ("Bill") to Harold Ober, n.p., n.d. Half page on lined yellow paper.
Faulkner asks Ober "Will you please order the sails to be made up, light duck? Have M-- send me the price, and I will mail a check. Will be home about Mon 20th. Don't bother about Bennett. Who pays any attention(?) to what he says. Bill."
Faulkner was an avid sailor, often taking friends and visitors out on Sardis Lake near his home. He'd bought The Ring Dove in the spring of 1950, while finsihing Knight's Gambit (see Karl, p. 784). Other boats followed, including Mimmagary, a boat that he acquired at the outset of his relationship with Joan Williams. Frederick Karl recounts the time that Faulkner went out alone on The Ring Dove and, finding himself in a squall, lost his toolbox and his pants with his wallet and cash in his pocket. It is unclear what issue Faulkner refers to at end relating, presumably, to Bennett Cerf of Random House.
