FIRST EDITION, TRADE ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO JOAN WILLIAMS on the front free endpaper: "For Joan, with love Bill." ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED on the title: "William Faulkner New York 25 May 1962," less than two months before his death. In April 1962, Faulkner traveled to West Point to give a reading and hold classroom conferences with cadets at the United States Military Academy. He traveled to New York City afterwards to receive the Gold Medal for Fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters on May 24th (the day prior to the inscription on this title-page).
