CATHER, Willa Siebert. Galley proofs of the collection Not Under Forty (New York: Knopf, 1936). Comprising 50 galleys, each 25 x 7 in., printed rectos only on foolscap proof paper.

A RARE SET OF GALLEYS, uncorrected but formerly owned by Cather, of this series of literary essays including "A Chance Meeting," "The Novel Démeublé," "148 Charles Street," Miss Jewett," "Joseph and His Brothers" (on Thomas Mann) and "Katherine Mansfield." In a Prefatory Note (elimated in later printings), Cather explains the book's curious title: "it means that the book will have little interest for people under forty years of age. The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts..."
