1 page, 10 x 12¾ in., light pencil with watercolor in gray, pale shades of red, yellow, green and blue. (Mat burn).

A fine "Phiz" drawing, showing a crowded party scene at Mrs. Waterbrook's London dinner-party. It contains many figures in both fore- and background. This drawing, for Chapter 25 of the novel. first introduces the character of the young attorney Tommy Traddles. The group to the right side consists of David Copperfield, the attractive young daughter, Agnes Whitfield and, behind them, Uriah Heap "in a suit of black." As one commentator notes, the depiction demonstrates Uriah's romantic interest in Agnes. "Much to David's disgust, Uriah has acheived a social footing equal to that of the other young guests" (Philip V. Allinham in The Victorian Web online). In the centenary edition (1810), J.A. Hammerton states that the drawing illustrated the passage "I could have wished [Uriah] had been less obliged by me, for he hovered about me in his gratitude all the rest of the evening, and whenever I said word to Agnes, was sure, with his shadowless eyes and cadaverous face, to be looking gauntly down upon us from behind."
