GALTON, Francis (1822-1911). Finger Prints. London: Macmillan and Company, 1892.

8o. 15 engraved plates (including one double-page plate), 2 colored. Original cloth (spine slightly faded).

FIRST EDITION. Though Galton wasn't the first to study fingerprints, he was integral in the implementation of the use of fingerprints in forensic science. The anthropoligist's interest in the field was piqued when his cousin, Charles Darwin, passed along Dr. Henry Faulds' research and encouraged him to continue the work. It was Galton who calculated that the chance of two individuals having the same fingerprints is one in 64 billion. This work presents a well-defined system of classification. PMM 376.
