4o (281 x 220 mm). 120 mounted albumen prints by Thomas Briggs each approx. 190 x 135 mm or the reverse, red printed ruled border, plate number and caption on mount, 2 maps, a frontispiece and text illustrations (some light marginal dust soiling). Contemporary green cloth elaborately gilt, gilt edges (some wear to spine and corners, upper cover almost detached). Provenance: Mary Carpenter (inscription on half-title); Carl Johan Lamm (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, with notes by James Fergusson. Colonel Biggs of the Bombay Artillery, was an architectural photographer in Bombay. His photographs of Ahmedabad are early documents of the splendor of the architectural beauty of that city. Gernsheim, Incunabula of British Photographic Literature 1839-1875 no. 882.
