Dickinson, mounted on card with hand-colored borders, bifolium with printed caption inserted before each plate, mounted on guards throughout. (Lacks plates 2, 10, 15, 18, 21, and 22, some scattered spotting, mostly in margins, short tears and some repairs to text leaves.) Contemporary half morocco and cloth sides, upper gilt lettered (worn, lacks backstrip).

FIRST EDITION, a rare hand-colored copy of Eden's important work, probably one of only a handful of copies published in this form. Emily Eden, daughter of William Eden, first baron Auckland, accompanied her brother, George, Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. Eden's fine portraits and descriptions record the Indian rulers, and often their families, with whom Lord Auckland met during his term of office. The richness and splendor of these Indian figures and their entourages are deftly captured. Not in Abbey.
