Colored engraved title, 36 colored aquatints by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, Bentley, Pyall, Hughes, and Edge, after Grindlay, Westall, Stanfeld, Roberts, Purser, Witherington, Fielding and Daniell, and colored by J.B. Hogarth. (Narrow 3-in. hole in blank margin of title and first text leaf, a few leaves becoming loose.) Contemporary green half morocco (defective).
FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLOR PLATE BOOKS ON INDIA, Published in six parts, Ackermann published the first two, and Smith Elder was advertised as the publisher in December 1826. The work is known in three forms, bound from parts, bound as two volumes without part titles, and finally with one title (as this copy, see Abbey). The subjects include scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora and Guzerat. Grindlay, founder of the ANZ Grindlays Bank, came to India in 1803, worked with the East India Company and served with the Seventh Bombay Native Infantry from 1804-1820.
