THE FIRST BOOK ON THE ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT. A rare Calcutta publication, and virtually never found complete: the RIBA copy comprises 32 plates (as here), and the V&A copy 48. Most of the sites documented are in Uttar Pradesh: the Shahi Quila mosque at Jaunpur, the mosques at Jami and Jhanjhiri, and the Chihil Sutun, later demolished. Kittoe also published on the monuments of Orissa and, in 1846, was appointed Archaeological Surveyor to the Government of India. RARE.
