Lot Essay

Range 60 yards was painted for, and reproduced in, Sir Peter Scott's renowned book The Battle of the Narrow Seas. Published in 1945, the books tells the story of the fight for control of the English Channel and the southern North Sea 1939-1945, where Scott commanded the First (and only) Squadron of Gun Boats against German E-boats. 65 years after its publication, this book remains the definitive source for the history of the wartime coastal forces and has been reprinted several times. Range 60 yards is one of eight oil paintings that Scott executed for his book and which are illustrated in colour in the various editions.
