A GROUP OF NINE WALKING STICKS PERTAINING TO PROFESSIONS AND PURSUITS
18TH, 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY,
Comprising: an ebonized and black leather "Surveyor's" cane, the top opening to reveal a set of instruments, 18th century, with an iron prong base, enclosing architect's tools; an "Airgun" cane with a carved wood naturalistic form handle; a "Bird-Spotting Telescope" cane with a leather handle; a brass-mounted and black lacquered "Microscope-Telescope" cane, signed Abraham Optician, Liverpool, the cap inscribed Presented by John Hartley, 1839; a rare "Naturalist's" Cane, fitted with a brass microsope inside an L-form ivory handle; a French "Child's Foot Measure" cane, with ivory handle and sliding brass brackets; a "Pacer's Cane", fitted with a pedometer to measure marching pace; a "Flashlight" walking stick with a braided collar; a "Periscope" cane, with a French Kenax camera attachment and a carved horn handle above an integral magnifying glass
