Lot Essay

Helen Allingham visited Venice twice at the turn of the 20th century. She stayed with Gertrude Jekyll's sister, Carrie Eden, who would have been the ideal guide. This view of the The Basilica was one of four watercolours made of Torcello.

On her return home, art critics were delighted with her temporary departure from her usual paintings, which tended to 'prettify' England. Venice on the other hand, needed nothing of the kind.

Christie's would like to thank Annabel Watts for her assistance in compiling this catalogue note.
