Lot Essay

Before making his famous journey to the West Indies in 1770, Brunias spent some years working in England as a draughtsman for Robert Adam. It is to this English period, beginning in 1758, that his decorative drawings of this type can be related. Further designs related to Brunias's work for Adam are in Sir John Soane's Museum.
