Lot Essay

A similar cigarette case, by Garrard, 1952, was presented to Captain R.C. Parker, M.V.O., as a token of gratitude from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh for his services as captain of the plane which took them to and from Tripoli (Christie's, South Kensington, 9 September 2003, lot 141).
It has been suggested that the present lot was a gift from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to Walter Lees during her state visit to Paris in April 1957.
