Lot Essay

Lady Lavinia Bingham (1762-1831) was the daughter of Charles Bingham, 1st Earl of Lucan. She married Viscount Althorp, who, on the death of his father in 1783, became 2nd Earl Spencer.

This copy is possibly that shown in the Large Green Drawing Room at Spencer House in a photograph dated 1892.

John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer and his wife Georgiana Poyntz were important patrons of Sir Joshua Reynolds and he painted several generations of their family over a period of thirty years. The South Drawing Room at Althorp is predominantly hung with these works, including his celebrated portrait of Georgiana, Countess Spencer and daughter Lady Georgiana Spencer, later Duchess of Devonshire.
