Lot Essay

These unusal salts were perhaps the inspiration for a series produced in the early part of the 19th century by Joseph Craddock and William Reid. See for example a condiment set of 1815 consisting of four salts, two mustard pots and six spoons, (Christie's, London, 9 December 1959, lot 146A) and another set of four salts dated 1815 and 1818 (Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lot 338).
