Lot Essay

George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney was a statesman, colonial administrator and diplomat. He was appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia 1764. He became Governor of the British West Indies in 1775 and was enobled as Baron Macartney in the Irish Peerage. By 1780 he was Governor of Madras and was created Earl Macartney in 1792 when he became the first envoy of Britain to China.
