Lot Essay

Adam Duncan (1731-1804) entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman at the age of fifteen and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and Commander in Chief of the North Sea. He defeated the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 thwarting an invasion of Ireland during the tenure of George John, 2nd Earl Spencer as First Lord of the Admiralty. In recognition Duncan was raised to the peerage as 1st Viscount Duncan.
