James, 5th Duke Hamilton married his third wife Anne, daughter of Edward Spencer in 1737. These plates were probably made at about this time; the 5th Duke of Hamilton died in 1743 and was succeeded by his son from his first marriage. For a Chinese export plate with the same coat-of-arms, circa 1733, see David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 265.
