Lot Essay

This idealized Dürer portrait was one of a series of busts portraying famous artists that Carrier-Belleuse executed in different materials between 1860 and 1874. The sculptor's uninhibited, masterful technique reflects a new sense of the German artist hero in that he drops the traditionally propagated similarity to Christ and in its place stresses the aged "man of action" with the pathos of a Renaissance prince.
