The present casket, which was originally designed to hold writing utensils, is known in a number of examples in public and private collections around the world. Originally attributed to Severo da Ravenna by John Pope-Hennessy, it has more recently been associated with a pair of unattributed bronze doors of the reliquary at S. Pietro in Vincoli, executed in 1477 (Radcliffe, loc. cit.).
