Each with rectangular seat covered with hessian, on fluted legs joined by H-shaped stretchers and terminating in paw feet, each with stencilled inventory numbers 'EN4922', twice '61101','20437?', 'N2489' and ['F?8539'], some partially defaced, and each further stencilled in red ink 'F17710', one with old paper label inscribed 'Mont.../R.(?)Derée Salon des ....', and remains of a further label with illegible inscription, with traces of earlier decoration

While the mark 'F17710' is almost certainly that of the château de Fontainebleau, it has not been possible to trace with certainty the various other inventory numbers. The remaining fragment of the label inscribed 'Mont...' could refer to one of Napoleon's Imperial residences in Italy, in this case the Quirinale, which was renamed in 1809 as Palazzo di Monte-Cavallo.

The present pair of banquettes is most closely related to the oeuvre of François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (1770-1841), dit Jacob-Desmalter. A related example, stamped by the menuisier, was formerly in the château des Tuileries (bearing the marque au feu of the château along with inventory numbers) and sold at Tajan, Paris, 26 June 2000, lot 252. A further related pair stamped 'Jacob D. R. Meslée' - stamp used by the firm of 'Jacob-Desmalter', firm run by François-Honoré-Georges and Georges Jacob père between 1803 and 1813 - was sold at Sotheby's, Zurich, 13-14 December 2001, lot 398.
