Lot Essay

Bomberg served in the Royal Engineers between 1915 and 1918. The Canadian Government commissioned Bomberg to paint Sappers at work: A Canadian Tunnelling Company, Hill 60, St Eloi in 1918 for a War Memorial Exhibition. The present work and lot 62 are from a series of preliminary studies for the oil, now in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
