Lot Essay

The present work compares closely with Blankerhoff's Ships in a gale off a rocky coast in the Statens Museum, Copenhagen, which depicts a man-o'-war and a fishing pink against a strikingly similar coast line (see Tempest and Shipwreck in Dutch and Flemish Art, Lawrence Goedde, 1989, fig 135.)
