Lot Essay

Ibbetson worked in Westmoreland in the Lake District from 1799 to 1804 painting numerous views of the lakes, and is known to have sketched skating scenes similar to the present composition. By the end of the eighteenth century, the dramatic landscape of the Lake District was the subject of particular artistic and literary admiration.
