Cockburn--Vintage 1927 Embossed wax capsules, one very badly damaged. No labels. Levels: one base of neck, two upper-shoulder Tasting note: It is always interesting to open a bottle for a client who believes his port is Cockburn, when his bin label merely indicated '1927'. The cork turned out to be reassuringly branded 'Cockburn vintage 1927 bottled 1929'. The wine itself was a fully mature, warm amber; nose dusty, high-toned. Still sweet though, despite thinning. Good flavour, with the refinement of age (in 1994). Most recently two bottles: medium-tawny, very little red and with an overall brown tinge; sweet, meaty but low-keyed; nice texture, excellent condition, but drying out. Last noted at the Cockburn 'Memories of a Century' tasting at the Traveller's Club, London, May 2002. At best ***** M.B.
