A MACHINE-AESTHETIC ART DECO DIAMOND BRACELET, BY MARCHAK

The pavé-set diamond articulated band with pavé-set, baguette, circular, marquise and trapezoid-cut diamond rouleau terminals of crossover design, mounted in platinum, circa 1935, 13.5 cm, with French assay marks
Signed by Marchak, Paris, no. 1621

This bracelet exemplifies the almost pure abstraction of motifs fashionable at the end of the Art Deco period. In observing the terminals, one can trace inspiration to the Chimaera bangles in coral initiated by Cartier in the 1920s. In this model, the more realistic chimaera is replaced by abstract forms that seem inspired by the machine age much like the figures painted by French artist Ferdinand Léger.
